CHONG WEI WINNING GOLD

GOLD COAST: Datuk Lee Chong Wei gave the world number one K.Srikanth a chance to win his third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the men's singles event at Carrara's Leisure and Sports Center, here.

The 36-year-old emerged from defeat in the first set before winning in a three-set set of 19-21, 21-14, 21-14 on 25-year-old Indian player.

It is Chong Wei's fifth win which is placed second in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 over Srikanth, which has been placed at the top of their six previous meetings.

With the win, Chong Wei closed his last appearance at the Commonwealth Games with a non-losing record in 13 games since the last three editions.

Besides the Gold Coast, the Penang-born player also won gold medals in the 2006 edition of Melbourne and 2010 (New Delhi) but did not play in 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Chong Wei also joined former national doubles player Koo Kien Keat as the most outstanding athlete in the Commonwealth Games by winning five gold medals.

In the first set, players in the seven world rankings started well when leading 5-0 with a tight smash line but Srikanth used his pace to lead 11-9 before winning.

The second set of matches was intense with Srikanth forcing Chong Wei to give up his sweat and experience before the former world number one brilliantly led the match to the set.

In the third set, Chong Wei was in a different class when at one point precedes 11-5 before the seemingly nervous Srikanth collapsed.
